Costa de Velas
Protected Area for the Management of Habitats or Species
This terrestrial has an area of about 62 hectares and covers the entire southern coast of the island from the jetty of Marina das Velas to Urzelina.
This area is extremely important because many seabird species nest on the high slopes, such as the Cory’s Shearwater (Calonectris borealis). Regarding the flora, there are specimens of the endemic species Firetree (Morella faya), Azorean Heather (Erica azorica) and Azorean Picconia (Picconia azorica).
It is also classified as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) of the BirdLife International organization.
